The Port of Walvis Bay is strategically situated half way up the coast of Namibia it is the gateway on the West coast of Africa to countries such as Angola, Zambia, Botswana and South Africa.
The port is run and operated by Namport whom are the National port Authority in Namibia and have been so since 1994. Namport manage both Walvis Bay and Luderitz. Namport also manage the syncrolift (dry dock facility) with vessels up to 2000 tonnes that can be lifted for repairs. The Walvis Bay Port control, control all shipping movements within the port limits and maintain a 24 hour watch on VHF radio on channel 16. Working channels are 12 and 14.
Pilotage is compulsory and all requests for pilots must be requested to the Port Captain prior arrival via a local agent.
The port has the following craft:
2 x Azimuth tractor tugs with bollard pulls of 28 and 23 tonnes respectively.
2 x firefighting tractor tugs of 31 and 27 tonnes bollard pull.
2 x Push / pull tug with a bollard pull of 10 and 12 tonnes.
1 x Launch.
1 x Grab dredger / anchor handling barge.

Break Bulk Terminals:
There are two bulk terminal operated in the port of Walvis Bay, the first being the Walvis Bay Salt Refiners Terminal dedicated to salt exports and the other being the Walvis Bay Bulk Terminal (Pty) Ltd which is designed for multi-product loading such as metal ores, coal and concentrates in the form of lead, zinc, copper and coal. The two terminal are capable of a load out rate of 500 mtons per hour.
The port has a container terminal which can handle 250 000 teus per annum. Services provided are loading and unloading, stacking and de-stacking, transport between the stack and the vessel and reefer connections and monitoring.
Stevedoring is a combination of private companies and the port of Walvis Bay. Stevedores are able to offer the following services; handling general cargo,
Break-bulk, transit cargo, project cargo, containers, frozen/fresh fish, perishables and provisions and stores.
