The port of East London is situated on the east coast of South africa between the ports of Durban and Port Elizabeth at the mouth of the Buffalo River. East London is the only commercial river port in South Africa. Centrally located both nationally and internationally, the port is strategically positioned to act as the gateway between Africa and the global markets. There are a total of 11 commercial berths and one repair quay. Five of these berths are on the west bank, offering a total length of 1206 metres and six on the east bank offering a total of 1204 metres. The repair quay is also situated on the east bank and measures 110 metres.
East London Marine Port Services are not 24 hours. Working hours are from 06:00 to 22:00.
After hours service is available on request.
A mandatory underkeel clearance at port entrance channel is 10% of draft.
Permissable draft in entrance channel:
At all states of tide: 10.4m
Subject to tidal restrictions: > 10.4m
Vessels exceeding 10,4m draft are to obtain special permission in writing from the office of the Harbour Master.
